Shito Ryu Karate Do Kyokai

Welcome to Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai.

Our organization, located in Canada, offers instruction in the traditional Japanese Martial Arts as taught by the late Master, Fumio Demura Sensei.

What is Karate?

Karate is a martial art and a form of self-defense.  All dojos and instructors strictly follow the guidelines of the organization, and all ranks are registered with Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai.  Our intent is to pass on the noble traditions of this ancient martial art.  We offer instruction for adults and children in traditional Japanese Shito-Ryu style karate and Okinawan Kobudo (weaponry). Some locations offer instruction in Muso Shinden Ryu Iai-Do (art of drawing the sword) and Toyama Ryu Batto-Do (art of cutting with the sword).

In the first year of training, we work to develop the physical skills a child will require to be successful at studying karate. Our method of instruction helps children to develop strong character, self-discipline and respect for others while learning skills that, with practice, will allow them to defend themselves quickly and effectively should the need arise.

The benefits of karate training are numerous. Karate training includes exercises that increase stamina, flexibility, strength, and endurance. Karate is also mentally and physically challenging leading to a high degree of self-discipline. With each success the level of confidence of the student increases, which benefits the whole person. Karate is recognized as one of the most effective methods of defending oneself against unprovoked aggression. In addition, karate provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for competition to those interested in that aspect of training.

Karate means different things to different people.  Young people, for example, often take up karate because they want to learn how to defend themselves.  At the children’s level, training is designed to have fun and at the same time teach the child strong traditional values.  Older people, however, may only be looking for an interesting and fun way to stay fit.  Parents often enroll their children their children in karate lessons to teach them discipline and to develop coordination.  Whatever the reason may be, if karate is something you would like to be involved in, make sure you research the dojo you are about to commit to and start having some serious fun.
